NSF Latest ISO 21469 Lubricant Standard Guarantees Food Safety

The National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) set one of the latest standards for food safety, the ISO 21649 certification intended for food-grade lubricants used in machinery for food and beverage production. Designed to ensure food safety, this certification focused on the manufacturing of food-grade lubricants, also called H1 lubricants, and improved on the previous H1 lubricant standard.

Aside from a detailed lubricant definition, the certification covered ingredient safety, label accuracy, and the adherence to good manufacturing practices (GMP) and standard protocols. The certification program also required manufacturing risk assessments, third party production facility audits, and analytical product testing.

Lubricant manufacturers applying for this certificate would need to be assessed by an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited certification program regarding hygiene. Specifically, the program would check their compliance with the International Organization for Standardization's (ISO) hygiene requirements involving chemical, physical and biological risks associated with the lubricant use.

Through NSF’s multi-purpose lubricant standard, a wide range of certified products has been continuously introduced in the market. The ISO 21469 standard addressed not only incidental issues of food contact but also of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, tobacco, and animal feed manufacturing,

The NSF ISO 21469 certification for food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade lubricants is tailored to help guarantee end-users of product safety and quality as food and beverage processing and manufacturing industries adhere to the hygiene requirements established by the standard. This ISO certification constitutes the important difference between H1 registered products and those offered as merely H1 compliant, in which case no independent assessment has confirmed adherence to H1 standards.
