Turning your Production Plant H1-friendly

Food and beverage production companies have long feared the adverse effects of food contamination in their production plants including bad publicity, product recalls or worse, decrease in market value. In order to avoid these situations, the best solution for food processing plants is to follow a sequence of steps for switching from standard oils to NSF H1 or HT-1 registered lubricants. 

The first step is to understand the major roles that food-grade lubricants play in the production facility. These lubricants are classified into three groups; the NSF H1 (incidental contact with food or beverage), NSF H2 (no possible contact with food or beverage), and the NSF H3 (for direct contact with food or beverage). The NSF HT-1 registered products are used exclusively for heat transfer oils which can have possible contact with the food, while NSF HT-2 registered products are solely used for heat transfer applications wherein there is absolutely no possible contact with the food or beverage being produced.

Managing the storage and handling of your food-grade lubricants comes second. Examination should start from the delivery itself, no lubricant with a broken seal should be used. Ideally, the typical storage temperature of NSF HT and HT-1 registered lubricants is +5 to +25 degrees Celsius. Dry storage, correct labelling, the use of protective equipment, as well as its proper disposal are highly recommended.

During the conversion of the equipment to NSF H1 or HT-1 registered lubricants, a proper documentation according to HACCP planning must be implemented. Before the equipment can be loaded with fresh NSF H1 or HT-1 lubricants, it must first be operated until it reaches normal operating temperature and then have its filters and reservoirs checked or replaced. Once the equipment stabilizes and shows no sign of contamination, the equipment must then be labeled of what type of lubricant it is now using.

The maintenance of the newly-converted equipment must be implemented using an oil analysis program as the final step. This program can provide the plant with more savings and less unplanned downtimes.
